THE PHANTOM BOMBER OF RAF LISSETT.
RAF Lissett was opened as a bomber airfield in February 1943. It was the home of 158 Squadron. During the duration of WW II many bombing raids were launched on Germany from RAF Lissett, several of them resulting in the loss of Halifax aircraft and the brave seven-men crews who flew them.
According to legend, a phantom bomber was often seen flying above the airfield before a crew went missing. On 20th January 1944, for example, a ground crew reported seeing a phantom bomber fly overhead and, later that same day, Flight Sergeant Thompson and his crew failed to return home. On 10th April 1944 a phantom bomber was again sighted and, when twenty Halifax bombers were sent to bomb the marshalling yards at Terginer in France that same night, several crews were again lost.
Because of its association with the loss of aircraft and crew, the ground crews at Lissett soon nicknamed the phantom bomber the Reaper's Bomber. The Reaper's Bomber was evidently last seen flying over Lissett on 16th August 1944. sadly true to form, that same night another crew was lost.
